Agrupamento de Escolas de Infias Vizela is a a public school northern Portugal and includes all school levels -from Pre-Primary to the Secondary and also Vocational Studies. At the present attend school 1250 students, ages from 3 to 18, in 6 different buildings (spread through town) according to their residence, age and school level. The main building is recent and well equipped and most of the children (700), ages 10-18, attend to school in this building. Children with special needs also attend classes together with other children, but severe cases have special equipped rooms and staff. Vizela used to be a very important textile centre, but due to the international crises many families have unemployed parents and are living on Social Welfare. High percentage of school children come from poor economical backgrounds, parents with low academic skills and lack of interests in educational and cultural activities. In recent years due to high level of students in school failure, teachers and other school staff were committed in improving the success rates by various forms: developing of a wide range of extracurricular activities, engaging pupils in international activities and developing skills for the 21st century. All teachers are highly qualified and students are encouraged to take part in all kind of projects and contests. We want to continue to develop projects involving our pupils, especially European level projects. Erasmus KA2 will represent another step towards internationalization and will give students a chance to raise awareness to cultural differences. The people involved in this project are highly experienced teachers and also part of School Administration. All of them are based in the same school and they are full-time teachers. They already took part in former Comenius and Erasmus KA1 projects and are well aware of the inherent responsibilities of an international project. For this project there is a main coordinator, in the case of her absence there is a vice—coordinator to take charge of the project. Agrupamento de Escolas de Infias Vizela is a pilot school in a new methodology based in project learning and also flexible curriculum. The Portuguese Ministry of Education has been monitoring and encouraging some of the original initiatives developed in the curricular activities in our school, such has articulation between Library and school subjects (pupils are encouraged not only to read but also to research); using research based learning to develop intellectual skills and transform the pupil in the center of learning. Participation in this Erasmus KA2 project may contribute to the dissemination of good practices that are already in place at our school.
